The Innovator's Mindset By George Couros

For the past six years I have been taking piano lessons. When I first started, my lessons were a breeze. Some songs I would only practice one or two times before, and I would still get that yellow smiley face sticker on the page. The years went on and the music just kept getting harder and harder. I would come to a lesson, and “forget” to bring one of my books with an assigned song in it. My teacher, Mrs. Miller, would remind me that she only gives me songs she knew I was capable of conquering. Having an open mind, always came with better results. A person with a growth mindset is more successful and has better results, rather than someone with a fixed mindset.
Someone with a growth mindset, as described by Carol Dweck, is “an individual who believes their talents can be developed”(What Having a “Growth Mindset”Actually Means). In other words, a person with a growth mindset would practice the piano daily and work harder and harder to try to accomplish different goals. Instead of the pianist remaining at the same level they play on, they try to advance. In “The Innovator’s Mindset” by George Couros, he shows how a fixed mindset is like having a brain being locked. There may be talents, abilities, and

My teacher, Mrs. Miller, though she may not know it, has a growth mindset. She often gives me music that is a little harder than my current level, but she always helps me go through it piece by piece until I can get it down to almost perfect. Having a growth mindset has been such a beneficial thing for me, while playing the piano. Instead of giving up on a song, because it seems I’m not talented enough to play it, I’m motivated to work harder so I can play it well. This isn’t only a good thing to have while playing piano, but something to keep in mind in anything that you face. Through hard work, dedication, and motivation a growth mindset can be achieved. It makes people smarter and results in good things

Summary: In the article “Brainology”, Dweck talk about two types of attitudes or mindsets. The two types are a growth mindset and a fixed mindset. Students with a growth mindset tended to get up again from setbacks and continuously improve academically with added effort, while those with a fixed mindset had a mindset that their abilities is what they are stuck with, they are afraid to further challenge themselves; due to belief that they aren't capable. Dweck had concluded that praising one without any acknowledgement of effort tended to create a fixed mindset while those praised for hard work or effort were more likely to not only feel more confident but still kept trying even if a task was a challenge, making these qualities a growth mindset,…

Some people have a fixed mindset, when they succeed, they keep on going. When they fail, they give up easily. On the other hand, people with a growth mindset never give up; they just keep going and believe in themselves and other people. Duckworth said, “So far, the best idea I 've heard about building grit in kids is something called ‘growth mindset.’ This is an idea developed at Stanford University by Carol Dweck, and it is the belief that the ability to learn is not fixed, that it can change with your effort. Dr. Dweck has shown that when kids read and learn about the brain and how it changes and grows in response to challenge, they 're much more likely to persevere when they fail, because they don 't believe that failure is a permanent condition.” The idea of “growth mindset” shows a way for students to be able to gain grit and a way for them to learn how to commit to their obligations in school and in life. Students’ accomplishments and success has proved to be unrelated or even inversely related to talent.…

There’s a Chinese Proverb that says, “Failure is not falling down, but refusing to get back up again.” I really wish I heard that quote when I thought I was a failure, but really was just being lazy. In Carol Dweck’s article “Brainology” a study is conducted on seventh grade students and their mindsets. Their mindsets were measured and studied for two years. Dweck studied the difference between the fixed mindset and the growth mindset students and how they did in school.…

In GPS 1010, I have learned that a person’s mindset is established in (1) a particular way of thinking; or (2) a person’s attitude and set of opinions about something. In addition to these items, one can either have a growth mindset or a fixed mindset. These mindsets play a huge role in one’s success or failure. The mindset has “two meanings to ability, not one: a fixed ability that needs to be proven and a changeable ability that can be developed through learning” and repetition. To sum up, “the fixed mindset makes you concerned with how you’ll be judged; the growth mindset makes you concerned with improving.”…

When reading the article "The Secret to Raising Smart Kids" by Carol S. Dweck (Scientific American, 2015), I came across multiple new and interesting pieces of information I did not consider when comparing and contrasting the values and ideas of a person with a "fixed" vs. "growth" mindset. The one point that I found to be the most pertinent in regards to the dangers of possessing a "fixed mindset" study is when Dwecks claims, "Many people assume that superior intelligence or ability is a key to success. But more than three decades of research shows that an overemphasis on intellect or talent—and the implication that such traits are innate and fixed—leaves people vulnerable to failure, fearful of challenges and unmotivated to learn. " This was…

Psychologist Carol Dweck has determined the effects of a growth mindset, when someone believes that they can be good at anything by having the ability to actually achieve their goal, and a fixed mindset, when someone believes that they are either good or bad at something based on their inherent nature. The cause of these mindsets is a bit like nature vs. nurture. One believes they are born with it and the other believes that they are able to change it. The big difference is that one mindset puts in the effort to be good and the other accepts everything as is. I believe that I have a growth mindset seeing that I was raised to by my parents and grandparents to do everything on my own.…
