For some companies survival or maintaining market position depends on their ability to create that special edge. The key ingredient for success is innovation. To be innovative is seeing things from different and broad perspectives and taking risk to open up new markets or offer new ways of serving mature ones. The auto manufacturing industry is an excellent example of what happens when an industry fails to innovate. Instead of improving how their products served their consumers, the automotive industry has only been making cosmetic changes and has remained largely the same throughout the 20th century. Now that these companies are being faced with bankruptcy and the risk of going out of business companies’ are beginning to innovate. Had organizational leaders been looking for ways to innovate, such as more fuel-efficient, environmentally friendly vehicles, the problems they are facing now may have never occurred. In order be in the best position to seize the competitive advantage and prosper, an organization must cultivate an environment that is cable of executing innovative ideas. Tolerance for risk, a willingness to fail and a whole lot of patience will allow a business to be successful in their attempts at innovating. By establishing a strategic plan, companies can develop the ability to continuously improve, nurture new ideas, and develop the best ones to fruition.
