DECIMATED INNOCENCE Tiffany Madison, a renowned writer, once said, “No one loses their innocence. It is either taken or given away willingly.” What Tiffany Madison is saying that a person either loses their innocence by someone else 's action or their own. In the Harper Lee 's To kill a Mockingbird you can see that this quote is held true throughout the book, that Innocence is something that is taken away due to someone else 's actions. The idea that childhood innocence was destroyed because of other people 's hatred and prejudice and ignorance was the most prominent recurring theme in the Mockingbird book.

The verdict of the trial was both confusing and aggravating for Jem, Scout, and Dill a friend of Jem and Scout, that Tom Robinson was found guilty. Some of Jem 's Innocence was robbed from him when he heard the verdict of the rape trial because he couldn 't believe that with all the clues pointing to Tom 's innocence that he was still found guilty. Jem shows his emotion towards the trial when he starts to cry from his realization of how cruel and ignorant the world can be. Also his views on life change, you can see this when he tells scout not to kill a ladybug in the house but instead let it go free outside.
