Most stories start with a good guy and a bad guy. The antagonist, cruel uncompassionate, and the protagonist with a caring heart fuelled by bravery. Many believe one is born good or evil, yet heroes and villains are not made when they are born, but when they complete the self-journey into becoming one. The self-journey is the most important part of one’s life where they face the perils of the real world, but the horrors inside their own selves. In this journey, they mature and define who one will be, allowing the growth of corruption or honor. It tests how much the protagonist has grown and if they are ready to face the final battle. It sees how the character reacts and teaches many valuable lessons, which, in return, help the character to further grow. In the novel Uprooted, Agnieszka is continuing on in her journey. The tests that Agnieszka has to face not only test who she has become, but help her grow further and ready her for the final battle. The Dragon leaves his tower, called away for business and Agnieszka is left alone. While the Dragon is gone, Agnieszka receives a call for help from her village, and the corrupted forest and the creatures within it have attacked her home. Novik writes “I’d never thought of magic, of my magic, as good for anything, until I stood there and knew that there was no one else but me; that whatever was in me, however poor and clumsy and untaught, was more magic than anyone else in my village had. That they needed help, and I was the only one left who could give it” (Novik, 78). As seen, Agnieszka could have sat around and done nothing, but since the changes in her life, she had grown enough to realize that she was the only one who could save her village and, defying orders, Agnieszka leaves the tower and heads to her village. Using her magic, she manages to drive some of the creatures off, but there are still too many for her to handle alone. Not only does it show the values of a hero’s journey, but shows how one can grow and teaches valuable lessons along the way. Agnieszka’s journey shows the inner growth that a hero’s journey gives. It shows what lessons important parts of the journey can give. How the change of familiar circumstances can teach one to not give up. How the trials test one’s abilities and give one the lessons of doing what is right, and problem-solving skills, can help one mature. And how the final battle completes the inner growth by teaching the most valuable lesson of all. To trust oneself know that truth will only ever be important if there is someone to listen to it. In the end, the journey of a hero is an important step one must take in their lives. Whether it be an everyday event like changing grades in school or an unusual one like Agnieszka’s, the hero’s journey is a special moment in everyone’s lives that teach lessons and help one grow into the person they were meant to
