The Party obtains and maintains power in Oceania through psychological manipulation, propaganda, physical abuse, language control. All of these methods allow the Party to grow more powerful with each passing day as the people are ignorant on the structural injustices or are ignoring the fact that they are being suppressed. But the most potent way the Party preserves its power is by psychologically manipulating the people’s minds. The use of violence ensure the safety of the Party by eliminating any form of originality. By inflicting fear of physical pain, it demonstrated to be an effective tool to control any thought of overthrowing the government. In addition, the separation of society into three classes also serve to prevent integration of lifestyles that could jeopardize the power of the government. When O’brien came to the Record Department “a momentary hush passed over the group of people round the chairs as they saw the black overalls of an Inner Party member approaching” (Orwell 216). In Oceania, the Inner Party represents the most privileged and has the most power among the three social class. Their job mainly consists of regulating the Outer Party and watching for any indication of betrayal, while leaving the proles to live their regular lives. Yet, they are also being subjected to the rules of the Party, which is abstain from having internal emotions and always hate the enemy.
