The Inlet Inn: A Short Story

Improved Essays
As Nell and Asa walked up the steps to the Inlet Inn, Asa pulled out a small prescription bag from his breast pocket and said, “I need to make a delivery to one of my customers upstairs. I’ll come down to the ballroom when y’all start to play.” They stood on the veranda facing each other uncertainly as the scent of hush puppies and clam chowder wafted out of the large inn. Nell was still outraged by her fiancé’s harsh words regarding her Jake and Miss Bessie / and she now questioned his interpretation of the fight on front street. He whispered into her ear, “I know how stupid I can get, but I can’t see …show more content…

I usually don’t see you on the dance floor.” “I’m a real heeler in the not ballroom. Ladies don’t seem to appreciate dancing with a nose in their bosom.” “Picky, picky,” said Nell. Then she added, “Now with these new dances like the Charleston, you’re not really holding the girl like you are in a waltz. You dance separately.” Buddy leaned in toward her and lowered his voice, “I’m really more of a back room kind of man.” “That don’t surprise me at all. “I've seen some of the rooms you've furnished at this inn. You got talent,” Nell said. “Well, this Raleigh crowd’s got some money. That’s a fact.” He eyed the room. Nell had the impression was a short Daddy Warbucks scanning each person’s wallet and worth. “Yeah,” he continued in a distracted sort of way, “the lumberyard pays the bills, but design is what I love. It’s a lot more fun to spend the afternoon drinking Boiler Makers and hanging wall art, than planking wood. Oops! Is it against the Eighteenth to say that?” “I

The destruction of innocence is a huge topic in Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird, the collage that I made portrays the book's theme immensely, while also showing the mistakes of small town civilians and the hushing of diversity within them. Courage is expressed by multiple characters in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird. The photos that I have used in my collage show courage in such a powerful way, as Atticus facing the rabid dog. Although Atticus had a rifle, he's an elder guy, his eyesight is weakening and an ill dog is coming towards him.…

Every small teasing comment, touch of Karmen, smile, exchange of endearments or whisper and wink between them, just caused Duke's anticipation to increase. Whilst the teasing and talking was fun, and added to his appreciation of the woman, it also increased his desire to do something about it, and prove himself to be a man of his word, and to discover if Karmen was a woman of hers. Not that there was much doubt in his mind, from the first view of her up on stage the previous night, she'd exuded sex appeal, and had a sex appeal, and he had been unable to get her out of his mind. Apart from the few hours he'd spent sleeping, there wasn't once that five minutes passed that he hadn't thought about what he'd love to be doing with, or to, Karmen. The natural eroticism he felt from her, and the not-as-innocent-as-she-looked arua was obviously not sensed by Daisy, as Duane per usual,…

Ever since the dawn of the first written language literature has always played a huge role in understanding why do humans behave and accomplish goals some that are very adventurous and against a human’s comfort zone. Literature reflects on human 's nature and pulls at their instinct to be adventurous and go against their comfort zone of a normal life to do something extraordinary. Two examples of pieces of literature that show off people that accept the call to adventure while other folks do not ,is the New York Times Article, “A Private Dance? Four Million Web Fans Say No” written by Charles Mcgrath. As well the poem “Sadie and Maud” written by Gwendolyn Brooks.…

and Mr. Wright are perhaps the most important characters of the play; the murderer and victim. Although neither character makes an appearance, one of them in jail and the other dead, much is inferred about them and their relationship through the dialogue of the characters, particularly Mrs. Hale who was their neighbor. It is a widely known fact by all the characters that Mrs. Minnie Wright was oppressed, mainly by her husband, but through Mrs. Hale’s recollection, we discover about the life of Ms. Minnie Foster. Before she was wed, Minnie Foster “used to wear pretty clothes and be lively…one of the town girls singing in the choir” (Glaspell 322). But there seemed to be a change after she married Mr. Wright; Minnie Foster seemed to die and the shell of what remained was left as Mrs. Wright.…
