a. The salary was a big difference, though he did not mind the change because he was passionate about what he did. Therefore, he was happy.…

Late English professor Scott Russell Sanders essay “Under the Influence: Paying the Price of My Father’s Booze” was originally published in a collection of essays titled Secrets of the Universe: Scenes from the Journey Home, an insight of his childhood going into an awareness of his adulthood. Sanders felt as if alcohol changed his dad completely when he is under the influence which transformed sanders outlook on life. The narrative story does not intend to make readers show sympathy but show them that Sanders was really affected by his dad’s actions and does not want to do the same to his children. Sanders uses narration, description, definition, and compare and contrast modes to explore his dad’s long-term addiction to alcohol, how he compares outside experiences to his dad’s reactions, and more importantly, evaluates his dad’s personality when he is under the influence and when he is sober.…

The story I have chosen for this assignment is Sonny’s Blues. Sonny’s Blues has an archetypal theme of light and darkness like many of the short stories we have read in the course. The Archetypal theme however was not my main reason for choosing this story. The reason I have chosen to write and expound on this story is because I felt a deep emotional connection to it when I read it myself and again when we read it as a class. I was able to draw many personal parallel between the story and my own personal life.…

In Quindlen’s essay, “Between the Sexes, a Great Divide,” the purpose of her essay is to demonstrate the vast differences between the two sexes. She exhibits the purpose successfully by using anecdotes throughout the essays, in many places throughout, all holding relevance to the differing mindsets of the sexes. She also utilizes syntax and diction to further emphasize her point. The thesis that is purported is, despite the differences that are astoundingly immense that separates the sexes, they will continue to attempt to mingle about, with these differing roles and standards serving as obstacles.…
Each person has his or her individual path to follow, no two paths are exactly the same; but, every now and then, paths interweave and people construct bonds with each other. In the case of Sonny and his brother, the narrator, in James Baldwin’s short story, “Sonny’s Blues”, their paths were parallel with one another until they grew up. Sonny left the slums of Harlem, aspiring to become a musician, while his brother settled in Harlem and became a teacher. Although the narrator and his brother ended up with completely different lives, the narrator being a family man with a teaching job and Sonny, an ex-convict playing jazz at a club, are ironically more similar than they are portrayed.…

Other times individual think they just waste too much money and don’t see anything in return, but once they are done they become thankful and proud that they did it.…

The son warns his father, “I have to watch you all the time” (39). When the father promises to take food, but later refuses it to give to the boy, the son urges, “If you break little promises, you’ll break big ones”(39) Without it being presented in the narration, conversation between the two alludes to man’s promise to not leave him alone in the world. The boy is basically saying the man may not keep that promise either, thus foreshadowing to the end of the story when the father dies and leaves the son to continue without him. The son’s sense of independence is relayed through dialogue when he boasts, “We have to be vigilant” (183) after his father warns him about other people that may be “carrying the fire” (183).…
