The Influences On Rufus King's Life

Rufus king was born in Scarborough Massachusetts on March 24, 1755. He is the son of Isabella Bragdon and Richard King. His father was very strong in his opinions and was prosperous famer-merchant and a loyalist. Due to him being a loyalist the King family had to endure much torment from many patriots. This humiliation and pain instilled a “lifelong passion for law and order and for a society controlled by rational men”. Rufus went to local schools and that gave him the necessary credentials to go to Harvard and eventually graduate at the top of his class. He was the first to actually benefit from schooling due to his stepmother. King was a well-rounded Congressman, who didn’t serve in the military for very long but was impacted by it, had and opinion about the government and used his talents to convince others , and his life was extremely impacted in many way due to his support in the creation of the declaration of independence. After they had all signed King took it back to the continental congress to secure the approval of the document. He then returned to Massachusetts to take part in the states ratification convention; during which he helped organize the first bill of rights. After the Declaration he was also elected into the state legislature and not 10 days of being with the legislature he was elected into the United States senate. King represented New York in the US senate for two terms. In 1796 King accepted to be Great Britain’s ambassador. 1803 was the year king decided to retire except he kept in touch with politics and due to his respect and admiration from other congressmen and business men King won 34 electoral votes in 1816 for president.
