Steinbeck was born and raised in California, but his family originated from European decent. Therefore, where exactly initiated his passion for writing? The significant attention to writing and reading began within Steinbeck’s family. His mom, Olive Hamilton, was a school teacher, and from her occupation Steinbeck grew up to be passionate about writing. Besides the influence of writing within his family, his college professor, Edith Mirrielees, also encouraged his focus on the importance of grammar. For example, she taught him that he needed to practice writing powerful sentences that way he would become a successful writer. Because of Steinbeck’s influence of his teacher, he learned to apply proper skills to his writings. Fortunately, Steinbeck’s life long friend, Edd Ricketts, also inspired him. Ricketts influenced Steinbeck to write the a short novel. For example, The Pearl, it was an inspiration of the Indians from the gulf of California. While Steinbeck and Ricketts explored the marine life, Steinbeck acknowledged the unfair system between the Indians and society. The discrimination on Indian lives were then another reason for Steinbeck to write.
