How Does Fitzgerald Portray Women In The Great Gatsby

The post-World War one period was known as the Roaring Twenties because it was a time of tremendous change and excitement. Along with the many advancements in technology came a variety of different trends and attitudes of the American society. The Eighteenth Amendment banned alcohol, but the government failed to enforce it. During the 1920s many bootleggers and speakeasies were established to secretly obtain and sell alcohol. Many people who became bootleggers and owners of these speakeasies became very wealthy. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby demonstrates many of the pitfalls of life in the jazz age. Throughout the novel, Fitzgerald utilizes events and characters to illustrate the problems underlying The Roaring 20s. Fitzgerald’s purpose for writing The Great Gatsby was to show the greed or desire of the people to gain the American Dream. Fitzgerald depicts the upper class of America during the Jazz Age in the novel. He wanted people in America to realize that becoming wealthy was not as great as people imagined it to be. They did not care about anyone else besides themselves. They were not afraid to be judged, they now begin to push the limits of women rights. Fitzgerald displays three types of women. One who is attractive and wealthy, but is a liar and a cheater to get her way, the character Jordan. Daisy, who is attractive and popular, but uses her sex appeal to gain power.
