The Influence Of The Stamp Act

I heard two people talking about the stamp act. They were saying it was passed March 22, 1765. they were saying everyone had to pay taxes on every piece of printed paper. Some of the things they put taxes on was newspapers, ship’s papers, legal documents,and licenses. The stamp act also charged people for dishes and many different things. The collected money from the stamp act was used to help pay for the costs of defending and protecting the American frontier. They were near the Appalachian mountains. 10,000 troops were to be stationed on the American frontier on this purpose. The cost of the stamp act was really small. What made the law so offensive to all the colonists was not so much its immediate cost but the standard it seemed to set. They said in the past taxes and duties on colonial trade had always been viewed as measured, not to raise money. The stamp act was viewed as a direct attempt by England to raise money. Without approval of the colonial legislatures. The door would open for far more troublesome. Few colonists believed that they could do anything more than grumble and buy stamps.
