One’s knowledge of the past can influence their future choices. Those with experience and memories of the past, use them to make important, life changing choices. If you don’t have any knowledge of the past, you could make a bad choice that was already made in history. In the novel The Giver, a young boy named Jonas was given the most honored job of the community, the Receiver of Memory. During his training with the previous Receiver, he was given memories, good and bad, of the world around them, and how the community was. Jonas quickly disagrees with the choices made by the community and makes a plan to give all the memories back to the community. We get to elect a new president for the next 4 years. The final 2 candidates running were republican Donald Trump, and democrat Hillary Clinton. On November 8th, Trump was declared our new president. Many people said that they were not voting for Trump because of his Hitler-like characteristics. The people who said this clearly have an understanding of what Hitler did and some characteristics he had that they also seen in Trump. Thus, making them not vote for him to protect the US from harm. “Now that America’s minority population is becoming a majority, Trump is able to tap into that same fear among its disenfranchised. Asking his supporters to raise their hand during his rallies, while proclaiming their allegiance to him is eerily reminiscent of Hitler’s Nazi salute, which was meant to inspire loyalty and sympathy towards the regime.” This information was given from a holocaust survivor to his son who was beginning to think that Trump and Hitler were alike and asked his dad to reassure him he wasn’t being ridiculous. He used his knowledge of things that happened in the past and used it to make a choice on who to vote

Jonas does not have memories of his own past as Offred and Tim O’Brien do, but rather his memories of are the past of what society was before it had transformed into a dystopia of uniformity.
