In my childhood I have experienced both delightful and detrimental moments. Growing up in a median income scale neighborhood brought many challenges. The challenge of being a minority in a dominant Caucasian area was harsh. My family consisted of one male older sibling, one young female sibling, father and mother. My brother and I underwent many different forms of child abuse.
Physical
The most constant form of abused experienced by me was physical abuse. I grew up in a machismo household where my father made all the rules. My mother had little control of what occurred in our household. My father is an alcoholic with bad temper. He would regularly hit me and my brother, taking out his frustrations on us. My father would tell me that only cowards beat their wives. The first time I was exposed to domestic violence was when I was dating my wife in high school. After many months of dating my wife she finally invited me into her household to meet her mother and stepfather. We had dinner and everything was going great until, her stepfather showed up intoxicated yelling at my mother-in-law because I was present. He disagreed with my wife dating, I felt like leaving but my mother-in-law stopped me and insisted that I stay. My wife and I were in her room watching a movie when suddenly I could hear commotion coming from the other bedroom. He had locked her in the bedroom and was physically assaulting her. Immediately, we ran and kicked in the bedroom door, preventing her stepfather from further hitting her mom. His stepfather stop and left. My first reaction was to defend my wife’s mother, I felt like I was obligated to defend her because she stood up for me but, after seeing him storm out I did not want to cause more tension. Since he was the main financial supporter her mother did not want to call the police. My wife told me this happened quite often. I felt scared when I saw the fear in my wife’s face and angry to just let him walk away. If I was in the same situation today I would have called law enforcement and have him arrested for his heinous
