It represents a significant event that happened in the bible, according to many religions. Is it realistic or nonrealistic? Well as we can see, the humans in this painting seem to be realistic. They are somewhat proportionally correct with human anatomy. The subject matter of this artwork is religion. Roman Catholicism seems to be the influence of it. This painting was made in Italy, where religion always played a big part of people 's daily lives. The patrons from this work of art might have been religious people and people with money. On the left side of him, it looks like it might be the Virgin Mary. She looks sad and looks like she is praying. Her eyes look bigger than normal. It rather emphasizes how she is crying and it shows more emotion. The two saints and Jesus have a facial expression that it is exaggerated to show the real emoting of the tragic event that was going on. She is wearing drapery from head to toe and she has what seems to be a halo on the back of her head. On the other side of the cross, there is another person. I do not know who that person might be exactly but I can say it might be Magdalena. Now her pose is different from Mary’s. The pose is more of a shocked person. She is not sad nor she is crying. Her hands are out and down and her face is looking up to the cross with a halo on the back of her head too. The cross is in the center of the painting, so your eyes directly go to that direction.
