The Influence Of Stereotypes In Society

“Oh, it’s gonna be funny seeing you in one of these”, one of my teammate’s mom said as she handed me a camo t-shirt. My team decided we would be wearing pink and camo uniforms at our October breast cancer awareness tournament. Being the only black girl on the team I was the only one who would stand out in this uniform, but I didn’t refuse to wear it. In fact, I was one of the biggest advocates for it.

I find that in society, especially in the city, people always expect certain things of you, especially when it comes to stereotypes within the races. Growing up I was always called a “white black girl” because of the way I dressed, the way I spoke, and the people I hung out with. I was young and didn’t realize how ignorant what they were saying
