In my opinion, our assumptions, prejudices, beliefs, and mindset truly come from the media. It plays a significant role in entertaining, informing, and instilling values to diverse audiences in our current society. The information we obtain from the social media, movies and video games molds us to differentiate certain race, religion and sex. We then create a barrier to a certain group of people because the media teach us how to categorize them into different classes. Often time’s children from the very young age try to obtain this social inequality because they are taught men and women are classified into different sexes. Children who play more violent video games are more likely to have increased aggressive thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Most of the bad effects of video games are blamed for the violence they contain. Earlier this year, an American study found that young men who play violent video games such as Grand Theft Auto have a lower capacity for female empathy than those who play more benign game. This propagates and promotes a constructed image of gender representation. My brother always tells me that women are portrayed as weak and inferior compared to men. They make these judgments about others based on portrayals in video games, in stories and on TV. Often time’s media injects certain characters to kids that can easily become their role models. For example, cartoon characters like white super heroes, and strong villains with magical powers attract little kids and they intend to imitate the behavior they watch through the media. In fact men cannot expose their emotions to the public because they are taught to be aggressive and violent. Therefore, people like us constantly compare ourselves to the images we see around us. The majority of images found in social media can reinforce stereotypical conceptions of femininity and masculinity. Stereotypes are commonly used in video games because they are easily identifiable, thus the creators of programs and scripts can refer to stock characters without having to delve into a complete characterization for the sake of explanation. By using stereotypes audiences can easily identify the characters and focus more attention on the story line rather than character development. It molds us to differentiate gender roles that are deeply rooted in the social archetypes. The negative impact of sexism thus puts pressure in men to fight, use drugs and involve in sexual activities because they think it proves their masculinity. Even though, there has been a progressive change for women and minorities in the past forty years, top executive positions are dominated by white males.
