Living in this neighborhood opened my eyes to an injustice that was placed on children, one that we didn’t ask for. Almost being taken away from my home because of actions that wasn’t my own opened my eyes to the children who was just like me, who couldn’t help the circumstances that they were born in. I didn’t know that social work would later become my passion, but if it’s one thing that these situations sparked in me is a passion to help people make their lives better, I wanted to make it my mission just like my school social worker to show a different path. A better one. One of the reasons why I choose social work as my major is because I feel like I can relate. I know what it’s like to be born into a life that isn’t perfect, a life where everything around you seem to be going against you. According to teachers I wasn’t supposed to make it this far, I was the girl who they said wouldn’t make it, But I made it. This value can be shown as Social workers treating people the in a respectful manner despite differences. This core value is very important to me because as a student there have been times where I was judged on my circumstances rather than the dignity that I deserve. As a social worker, I will take this experience and use it as lessons on how you should learn to respect the dignity and worth of a person, focusing on the humanity within each person rather than their current circumstance.
