A.) I believe that social media has played a contributing role in the rising demand for democracy in regions around the world. As an open society (Sterin, 2013, p. 381), our political process, as well as the liberties and freedoms we are afforded by democracy, are on display for all to see. With the emergence of the Internet and social media, this display is now visible to the far reaches of the globe. I believe the moment a group of individuals becomes aware of how things could be and they allow this knowledge to color their perception of their current way of life (to include those institutions that dictate/influence this way of life), then they are more apt to begin investigating a new way of doing things. Social media is an easily accessible, free, platform by which minority groups can voice their opinions (p. 405). It gives them a platform by which they can educate others on their culture, their ideology, and their beliefs. This education can help key viewers/followers into how they may be stereotyping particular cultures or may help dispel half-truths and outright inaccurate ideas/assumptions about those cultures. While the use of social media may not be the exact cause of significant change for these groups, it allows like-minded individuals to express their concerns and viewpoints with each other, cultivate a following, organize in-person actions, and educate the world on whatever their issues may be. It has allowed those individuals who may be geographically separated from other people like them, to connect and engage with those in the same situation. It has given people a way to create the support network, to voice their beliefs and concerns with those who understand, and assist in relationship building. Because almost everyone has access to these platforms, social media has facilitated the creation of cultural alliance groups; it is a much simpler process to find/join these groups as well as connect and advertise the groups existence than it would be physical
