1.1 Background of the Study
Television drama series have an impact on the perception of both women and men through stereotyping masculinity and femininity. Typically, men are portrayed as active, adventurous, powerful, sexually aggressive and largely uninvolved in human relationships Gilbert &Taylor (1991) and Goldman (1992). According to Doyle (1989) whose research focuses on masculinity children’s television shows typically shows males as “aggressive, dominant, and engaged in exciting activities from which they receive rewards from others for their masculine’ accomplishments.”

According to Kojoyan and Gevorgyan (2014), soap operas both reveal and re-shape gender stereotypes. Through their images and scenes not only represent social norms but also recreate and popularize them. Any nation`s largest and believable storytellers are soap operas, since they tell many stories to most of the people most of the time. The research concluded that Soap operas have become distributors of images, characters and also the mainstream of popular culture. First being a qualitative study it largely depended on reading huge texts by the researcher hence bringing in the issue of subjectivity. The researcher used an independent second coder to conduct intercode reliability on the episode of each series to ensure continuity between themes and operationalisation states.
Second, the study used two seasons per month between January and June 2016. More data would have been found in the seasons preceding or succeeding the research period. The researcher made assumption that all series and episodes that fell outside research period and sampling frame was not part of the research.
Third, the research did not look at the directly relationship between the effect of Papa Shirandula television drama series and the behaviour of the audience but depicted the implication that the programme has on viewers` perception of masculinity and
