The Influence Of Short Term Memory Affected By Age

Improved Essays
This is the background research on the science fair project about how short term memory is affected by age. Short term memory acts as a kind of “scratch pad” for the temporary storage of information that is being understood by the brain. Short term memory is sometimes referred to as the brains post-it-notes. It is thought of as the ability to recall and understand at the same time. It typically can only hold up to seven items or less. The information is only active for about ten to fifteen seconds or up to one minute at most. For example, if you had short term memory loss it would mean your “scratch pad” is not working very well. That means you would have a difficult time remembering something you were just told.

Immediate memory is a subset of working memory, and is also called the “mental scratchpad” (class notes). These abilities continue to mature throughout adolescence – when it is at its peak – and early adulthood but begin to decline as adults get older (Gluck, Mercado, Myers, 2014). Age-related improvement in working memory reflects, in part, exposure to and familiarity with what is being remembered; the more familiar an individual is with presented material, the more efficient their processing of the information (Gluck, Mercado, Myers, 2014). As adults get older, their processing speed declines, which may be evidenced by comparing average digit-span scores of children with older adults (7 vs 6, respectively) (Gluck, Mercado, Myers, 2014).…

Delayed semantic/episodic memory as measured by story recall and list learning tasks were both in the mildly impaired range; whereas, delayed scores on the visual tasks as noted by recognition scores were in the impaired range. Picture Memory Recognition score was in the mildly to moderately impaired range; whereas, Design Recognition scores was in the moderately to severely impaired range. A significant difference between General Memory and General Recognition was noted.…

Creating a powerpoint that included pictures associated with each letter allowed me to associate the meaning. I had to plan and design a project which helps someone in need. Formulating a plan and describing all the details allow me to imprint the image in my head. Completing and delivering supplies to a group home, allowed this acronym to enter my long-term memory.…

    A. SIGNIFICANCE: Lack of knowledge of the key molecular players and signaling pathways is a critical barrier to the progress of understanding the role of new protein synthesis in specific components of neural circuitry for establishing long-term memories. The proposed project addresses this important problem by employing a multidisciplinary approach in which we systematically combine tools of imaging, state of the art genomics and bioinformatics, molecular biology, functional analysis and electrophysiology. The proposed research is highly significant due to the following six major reasons: (1) Translation is affected in several neurodegenerative disorders. Several studies have shown that alterations in diverse range of components of protein…

It allows focus on specific items while filtering out other less significant stimuli. Memory is the process in which information is coded, stored, and retrieved. There is more than one type of memory, which again, can determine the capacity and duration for which we store what we have learned. Short-term memory has the most limitations; it is fragile and can be lost quickly. Of the two types of memory, long-term is essentially limitless and is accessed through three different types – semantic, procedural, and…
