The subject of the case is "A rape on Campus", an article written by Sabrina Rubin Erdely in Rolling Stones magazine. Erdely is a writer, journalist and editor at Rolling Stones. The article lacked integrity and substantial evidence as the victim wasn't questioned. I'm writing about this case because it demonstrates how a journalist's writing can be falsified if not backed up with proof. Also, it's ironic that the story managed to slipped by the professionals, get published, and read almost three million times before being doubted.…
Yesenia Gonzalez What are your thoughts on the multiple examples of the officers’ use of discretion? Since I started to read “cop in a Hood” I get to understand in a deeper way how police officers work in the state and in the county where I live: Baltimore, specifically the eastern district. I know that no one is perfect and when I say “no one” that also includes police officers.…
Rape: Nature or Nurture? Women are overrepresented in the rape victim pool. Men can be victims of rape as well, but rape mainly effects women (Miller 383). This leads theorists to the question: what is different in males that causes them to rape far more often than females? Often, the answer stems from either a nature or nurture standpoint.…
For most high school students, college is just around the corner! Most students have had a long treacherous journey of essays and endless amounts of application questions for college or post secondary education. Then, the day finally comes when the emotional acceptance letter arrives and the enrollment process begins. Contracts, terms and conditions, and code of conduct are just a few papers that college students read and sign in compliance with campus rules. After, the final step is to move-in, meet new students and go to classes.…
It is easy to come to believe with how much coverage there is over false reports of rape and sexual assault that the rate of false reporting’s for these types of violent crimes is higher than that of other violent crimes. However, out of every 1,000 rape crimes that are committed only an average of 100 are reported to law enforcement and out of that 100 reports only 2-5% is found to be a false report. This is the same rate of false reporting and other violent crimes. Philip N.S. Rumney of Sheffield Hallam University reviewed a large array of literature on the subject of false reporting and found that the estimates found within these documents ranged from 1.5% all the way to 90% of cases. (Rumney) One would not make the same argument of a 90% false report rate for murder or other crimes considered to be especially…

Based on the evidence of the cases, it is clear that White perpetrators are more likely to be acquitted or receive lenient sentence, as seen in the Kennedy case and St. John’s case, and minority perpetrators will receive more criticism and face harsher sentences, as seen by the Big Dan’s case and Central Park Jogger case. The hysteria against ethnic groups was rampant in the cases involving minority perpetrators, and the exiguous attention when minority victims are involved shows that White patriarchal media seeks to either blame minorities, or hide the fact that White against minority crime took place. This supports notion that the press still prefers crimes against White victims while ignoring those against Blacks, and although it focuses…
In the majority of cases, criminologist revolve their researches around concepts, reasons and theories that include tests, practices, surveys and researches. These methods are applicable in scenarios like serial killers, sexual assaults and any type of criminal activities. There are an amount of good examples criminologist could use to explain their research. In Paul Bernardo’s scenario, a serial killer/rapist would be useful as an example that criminologist could apply towards using different concepts and theories such as the attachment theory. Criminologists who study this theories are aware that a right nor wrong theory don’t exists.…
has changed over the last three decades and there is need to have the necessary adjustments in the legal system. By the time the reforms were introduced into the earlier laws the most important issue was ending gender discrimination in the ruling on the rape victims. This was a positive direction and it enhanced the confidence of the people in the judicial system. However, the priority of various parties affected by the reforms has changed and they need more specific definitions with regard to terms used in the rape cases such as consent. Therefore, this calls for more reforms into the law to enhance the justice system in the country.…
Accompanying the resurgence of popular ‘feminism’, the discussion of rape and sexual assault in places of work, education and duty have been brought to the table for awareness and reform. In many cases the justice system works against victims. Too many stories tell the events of detectives and district attorneys inappropriately favoring the accused and not attempting to investigate the claim of the victim. Further accounts of colleges and universities not complying with regulation to investigate all assault allegations and report felony charges to the police are prevailing as pressure by donors to maintain a pristine reputation dominates judgment. The term ‘rape’ is often substituted with the phrase, “It was a misunderstanding.”…

The Hunting Ground, by Kirby Dick, was based on the reality of undergraduate students who were sexually assaulted. In this documentary, students told their stories on how they were sexually assaulted and what took place after. Most victims were sexually assaulted by someone they knew. Victims had a fear of reporting their assaults; they did not want to be labelled, nor blamed for their assaults. They also had a fear of being turned down by the legal system as well as the institutions due to lack of evidence.…

Criminology has historically sought to explain the causes of crime, with the attention being primarily focused on why men commit a crime. There have been numerous theories that sought to explain why males commit crime however little attention has been paid as to why females commit crimes. With women becoming more liberated and active outside of the home, women were more likely to encounter the criminal justice system. This increased contact led to the criminal justice system shaping feminism. Criminology has influenced feminism by showing that men and women can both be held responsible for their actions when committing crimes.…
Sexual assault and rape in the United States of America is reaching new epidemic levels and nothing is being done to stop it. Rape kits sit untested and collecting dust all over the United States and it is estimated that the numbers have reached hundreds of thousands. In places like New York City for example, the backlog of untested rape kits by 2003 had reached 17,000. In order to reduce this epidemic, the country must implement harsher punishments and prioritize educational classes earlier in age in order to emphasize the importance of consent and responsibility.…
