During World War II many Puerto Ricans faced discrimination during their service in the military. The Military had instituted segregated units into their ranks. The segregated units incorporated both blacks and dark skinned Puerto Ricans, lighter skinned Puerto Ricans were allowed to enter the ranks of the white soldiers. Basic training for many people of color consisted of strict drill instructors who used racist slang against Hispanic and black soldiers in the unit. My grandfather had experienced racism as well during his training. And while he wasn’t a main contributor towards the war efforts like solders, he had also experienced the same racial slurs as many soldiers during this time. This type of behavior shows that even with the countries people in the same place, racism was still a major factor in the United States. Many soldiers who were not of light skin were not recognized for their deaths during the war until recently. Many Hispanics, and blacks returned from the war and had soon seen that even their service was not enough for this country to realize that everyone has the same rights. People of color still did not receive the same the rights as white Americans. The United States was considered a hypocrite, the whole point of the army in the United States was everyone work together for one common goal, to protect their way of living; But it seemed as though that once war time had ended racism was still an issue and that it was still a relevant issue in society. Racism tends to not be remembered when we think about wars but as citizens who are fortunate to live in a culturally open country we have to remember that we had to have a reason to fight for our right and the way the army dealt with the different races back then is proof of how we have evolved as a
