My New Media Essay

Use of new media in my life is pretty light. Compared to others around me it’s almost as if I live in the dark ages. Now, I’m nowhere near that level of hermit. I have my vices; particularly with my smart phone. My iPhone lives in my front left pocket and I do have a propensity towards its use. I have a girlfriend with a schedule busier than my own so non-face to face communication between us has become key. It also holds my music. Visiting the gym daily, at least two hours of my day is spent streaming music with my iPhone. As far as social media is concerned I am at the level of hermit. My last post on a social media platform was over a year ago. My life on Facebook for instance is built solely off of what photos or stories others have tagged me in. My profile is a product of my social environment. As far as my use of new media in the age of the internet I fall fairly low on the spectrum. Growing in popularity over the last few years it is now the most widely played online video game, surpassing such names as World of Warcraft and Starcraft 2. In fact, the world championship game just played over the weekend with the winning 5 man team being awarded one million dollars. Inside of just playing the game there is a large online community based primarily through a thread on the website Reddit. The posting board is made up of information concerning the professional teams who are watched religiously, as well as fan made content. On this board the information is ranked by the popularity of its content by the community.
