Napoleon's personality had a great deal to do with his legacy in France. He was driven and had an agenda to expand the borders of France. Napoleon wanted to restore France to its former glory, but this time with more freedom for the people. He gave people rights, freedom to follow their religion, and created his own code, or set of rules to follow. He created a Bank of France that pulled France out of its debt and a school system for education. It had universities and a public school system. Napoleon once said, " 'Of all our institutions public education is the most important. Everything depends on it, the present and the future. It is essential that the morals...' " (Cyber High The Consulate).
Lastly, Napoleon had an extremely rapid rise to power. He started out as a military general and hero, then worked off of that popularity to become a lasting Consul. He used that status to become the dictator of France and lead the French people. He lost a major battle for France and was then banished. He later returned to France and took over once again, rallying the people. He lost another major battle for France, and was banished for the last time to St. Helena in the Atlantic, where he later
