Personal Narrative: Existence

Improved Essays
Have you ever questioned the universe? Existence? I have, but the answers did not and do not come easy. I always struggled growing up. I did not really understand where I was supposed to fit in. The question of how I could possibly fit in always seemed to be on my mind. I always thought no one would like me. I did not think I was going to go anywhere. Of course, these were simple thoughts of my young mind, but perhaps if I explain what helped change me someone else can relate. Many events changed that mindset for me and made me a much better person. In this essay, I talk about my unhealthy childhood, my sister, and how traveling helped me view the world better. When I was growing up I was never very active. I never found an interest in playing …show more content…
I never thought I would think that when I was younger. I grew up in the ghettos of Mississippi. All I though the world consisted of being was rundown buildings and trash filled marshes. The universe was a very nasty place to me at a young age. The way my small world was when I was younger made me think the rest of the world was just as bad. It was not until later in my younger years I found a much more beautiful world. At one point my life, my family wanted to go to the mountains and stay in a cabin for a vacation. I was a rebellious teen at the time, so I almost rejected going. Thankfully my parents forced me to go because I will never forget how beautiful the mountains are. I remember getting on the roof of the cabin and watching the sun set. I also remember traveling to a stream deep and the woods and skipping stones The biggest moment, I can recall from staying high up in the mountains is when I was sitting by the fire reading a book when I looked out the window and saw snow floating to the ground. That was the first time I had ever seen snow. For some reason all those moments are what caused the cogs and gears in my head to start turning and made me confident in finding my purpose in the world. It inspired me to want to do more. I began to find hobbies that came from different parts of the world that I was never introduced to in my secluded little hometown. Maybe it is the bigger picture that matters. Everyone deserves a chance to see the rest of the world. It could always spark something hidden deep down inside

Analysis: The preceding narrative is from a time in my life not too long ago. It reminds me of Walker Percy ’s essay The Loss of the Creature in the sense that things are not always as they appear to be. Josiah, I liked the way you structured your introduction to your meaningful place, by juxtaposing it against conventionally sought tourist attractions and by painting a quaint, picturesque image using the details along Reesor Road. As such, the Robert Frost allusion fittingly contributes to the tranquil atmosphere with which Reesor Road is portrayed. A poignant point in your essay was when you mentioned that your family entrusting the Toyota for your utility resembles a rite of passage. How might this shift in faith as you enter emerging adulthood relate to parental expectations of your obligations as a young adult?…

“Shes coming back right?” a baffled 7 year old asks in response to the appalling news of her mother’s death. A vibrant imagination is accompanied by a crushing pain of reality that trails behind it ; I discovered this when I heard the words “no” . 10 years later, that conversation lingers in my head and holds not a cacophonous nor euphonious sound, but instead holds the neutral tone of reality, an alarm . As routine , at 6a.m., I hear a melodious alarm followed by the pitter-patter of my aunt who is getting ready for work.…

Wanderlust Wanderlust (wan·der·lust) noun - a strong desire to travel and explore. At the mention of this word, (and inevitably the explanation of what it is) a majority of people think that wanting to go to Europe for a summer and see the large and popular tourist attractions classifies them as being “filled with wanderlust and the urge for adventure”. While I know that there are no specifications as to what classifies someone as being filled with wanderlust, I firmly believe that there is so much more to it than simply wanting to see a few destinations outside of your country. There is a fine line between wanting to see the world and wanting to experience it. Travel becomes so much more when you step outside of your comfort zone and try…

About a mile down the stretch, she could see the small lake where her father and her would go fishing. Despite never catching much when she did it was always little pan fish that were enough to satisfy her efforts.…

I was scared I wouldn't be able to do anything to make my parents as proud of me as the middle sister had or I would let them down to the extent that the oldest sister had.
