The Influence Of My Life

Much like every kid, I grew up learning how to count to ten, tie my shoes, and ride a bicycle. Little did I know that the patience and persistence it took to accomplish these things would help me do so many things in life when I got older. I learned at a very young age that things happen that make no sense at times and some still seem unclear. A few events in my life have made me who I am and shaped my identity into what it is. It was a normal day in fourth grade that quickly turned into a nightmare. I had gotten off the bus, ran into the house, as I usually did. However, this time when I searched for my mother’s happy face, I only came to find a face of worry and fright. She told me she would be going to Winston-Salem. My dad was hurt and she did not know if he …show more content…
I was shaking, and crying. I barely opened the truck door in time to see what I had eaten for lunch hit the pavement below me. Little did I know my life was about to change greatly. After two months in the hospital my dad finally came back home. My dad is a miracle. He was in intensive care for a week. I still remember running out of the room whenever my dad’s brother and another person would grab the top and bottom of the blanket he lay on, to move him. Seeing the strongest person I knew screaming in pain was something that frightened me very much. He was told he would never walk again. Watching my dad’s determination to take those steps showed me to never stop trying. He was in a wheelchair; I could tell at my young age that my dad was somewhat embarrassed to be looked at as someone who was incapable of doing everyday tasks. Helping him with whatever it was he needed taught me responsibility and I felt a sense of purpose, knowing my dad was depending on me to help him. Then he eventually started to use crutches and now he walks normally. Remembering his strength and will to fight helps me every day. This experience is a part of my life that has made me who I

“Things always have a way of figuring themselves out.” That’s what my dad always would tell me when I was younger which, in a way, relates my life to Jeannette Walls’ in The Glass Castle. He told me that whether or not things had problems over time or in a matter of seconds, they would always figure themselves out. I carry those words with me as a reminder that things for me were really hard at one point, but in the end they figured themselves out. My parents divorced when I was twelve years old, and just headed into 7th grade.…

The next morning, I saw the newspaper while I was eating breakfast. On the front page, there was a story about a young boy who saved a woman’s life. She was going to walk into her house and end herself, but he smiled and waved at her from across the street. He ran over to her and asked her how her day was, in a completely mundane conversation, which led to her talking to him for hours. His mere existence on that day and in that place changed her whole perspective, resulting in her deciding to spare her life for the hope that she could help others like her.…

As an eighth grader, I had no choice but to balance out my school work, making sure to do all the chores, and taking care of my three younger siblings at home by myself. My parents would be up in the hospital taking care of my now passed grandmother, who had cancer, while I, being the oldest child in the family, had to stay home alone to take care of my younger siblings. At first it was a difficult task for my 12-year old self to handle. While I was doing my homework or studying, I would have to stop what I was doing and help my siblings on their homework. Another scenario would be me cleaning up the house, even though there were homework waiting for me on the table.…

Furthermore, coming here has made me realize that Colombians are very conservative in comparison with Americans. People talk more openly about topics like sex, homosexuality and drugs, and there are a remarkably bigger number of people with tattoos and piercings. Considering this, the Colombian society is way more judgmental and even more with things that are out of the ordinary. Getting a tattoo would give me the disapproval of all my family and a lot of glares on the streets. Where I grew up, talking about things like sex was not that common and only happened with close friends or family.…

It was not always easy to trust that my dad knew what he was doing and sacrificing for the betterment of others, but over the years I have come to appreciate the decision that he made, and even though he may not think it was the best, it brought my family closer together and we all gained an abundance of trust and respect for one another. Support is a major factor in a family that sticks together through thick and thin. When the doctors thought my dad was sick I did not know what to think or feel. All I wanted to do was cry, but I don’t think that I have ever loved or appreciated my family more. Looking back on these times I realize that I did take a few very valuable things away from all of these situations.…
