Throughout my entire life, my identity has affected the way I’ve experienced the moments I’ve lived. Our identities are composed of the places we come from, and I originate from several places, like my church, the home of my parents, the small town in Rhode Island that I live in, and my diverse high school. Those are the few locations that have carved the young woman I am now.
Coming from multiple backgrounds, here in the United States and in Guatemala, I have adopted several lenses for viewing my life. One perspective I have is being Latina. I’ve lived in America my entire life, but in specific situations I have had to change from the role of being “American” and speaking English, to being Guatemalan and speaking Spanish. In order to learn about me as a scholar, one must look at my work ethic and my passion. My teachers have been able to see that I am a dedicated student determined to go to college. TASS can give me a chance to express myself more than my grades do. My grades only represent my academic accomplishments, they do not show the true me.
The school I attend has pushed me to think critically. They’ve taught me how to advance not only in my regular classroom setting, but in the communities I am a member in such as my church and cross country team. My teachers have taught me the idea of perseverance when working. My teachers nominated me to apply to TASS, and to me this means that my teachers have seen both the dedication and effort I have for my work, and my passion for discussions and topics around race and equality in America.
TASS is known for its studies on ethnic backgrounds, and being Hispanic and bringing that perspective to the table is something that can help me connect more with the learning objectives of the seminars. Furthermore, through TASS I can also gain meaningful knowledge on the history of ethnic backgrounds in the United States. My passion and drive to learn can make me an active and energetic participant. I believe that if I were accepted to attend TASS, it will make me grow in many skills, such as leadership and
