The Influence Of Media Bias

Media bias can be found almost everywhere and can keep the viewers from seeing the full picture as they miss key information. It is not accurate and untrustworthy. This type of bias is most common when it comes to politics or any major widespread news. Media bias is mostly present in events or news that catch the people’s eyes and gather lots of attention. Many news sources offer different opinions and point of views on current events based on the political parties the source supports. Each source gives the reader only certain information related to their political party that they're okay with making public. Many people believe themselves to be unbiased and ethical, but due to almost two decades of research, scientist have found that most humans are subconsciously biased. Yale University conducted an experiment where participants had to choose either a man or a woman, with the same qualifications, for a lab manager position. The results: The participants composed of men and women chose the male as the more qualified subject. They were also willing to pay him more for the position than his female counterpart. The researchers stated, "Despite efforts to recruit and retain more women, a stark gender disparity persists within academic science" (Jane Porter). Even though both had the same amount of experience and were both perfectly capable to fulfill this position, due to the cultural context that each person was raised in they saw the male figure as a better employee than his female counterpart.
