The Influence Of Media And Poverty

Decent Essays
While the media does not contribute to poverty, it is undoubtedly a significant aspect in modern day society that influences how people think about poverty. The media affects society through the facts it chooses to reinforce. It is really important whether the media choose to refer certain things and not. It creates images about race and poverty, and plays an important role in shaping the way we understand race and poverty. It definitely frames the ideology of our mainstream social issues. It stereotypes poor people and minorities as uneducated, lazy, lack of good family values, not intelligent, unmotivated, etc.. We grow up with these viewpoints so that it became impossible to change overtime.

In this paper I will argue on how Kathryn Edin and H. Luke Shaefer’s recent studies in the book “$2.00 A Day- Living On Almost Nothing In America” directly reflects on poverty throughout America and why people that are in poverty live the way they do. After reading this book I was not amazed as I thought I would be. I did become interested in the authors after learning that they been scholars of the poor for more than twenty years.…

The impact of stereotypes depicted in the media, still has an effect on individuals in society today. As a young black African American women who often speaks her mind, with a very strong personality, people may very well stereotype me as a “Angry Black Women” commonly depicted on black television shows seen today. “Schemas of how people are likely to behave based simply on the groups to which they belong are known as stereotypes.” (Feist, G. & Rosenberg, E.2012). Stereotypes, form conclusions about people before even interacting with them based on a certain race ethnicity or even how you may look, down to the clothes you wear.…

Teenagers desire to have a slim body and to be beautiful such as women in media. The media is the most powerful influence on teenagers’ sexual behaviors and attitudes because the media emphasized the slim body of woman in advertisings. Also, the media tend to impose that women should be thin, which can harm adolescent girls who are unable to achieve the highly idealized shape of models. When teenagers think that their body seems different than the models in media, young people are not only losing their confidence but also being afraid of standing in front of people or encountering people. The author stated that the young girls are influenced on the images of skinny women even if they do not want to be because they are insecure about their appearance when they are not skinny (Bowdon).…

For white upper class individuals like myself, there are not tremendous opportunities to be exposed to African Americans, and if we are, it may be through selected portrayals by the media or by others with inaccurate deceptions. For these individuals, it is not necessarily their fault they are being thrown into these conditions and as a result possess a lack of understanding the lives of other individuals who may be different from them. In Weddington, there are children being raised with limited interaction with African Americans, and the interaction they are getting through adults or the media may be inaccurate in describing how African Americans truly are as people. Instead of having the next generation be one of acceptance and interaction, it has the chance of being sheltered and unaware of the struggles of other groups, making it difficult to solve any future issues to make communities stronger and more connected. In retrospect,…

No food, no clothes but the ones on their back, and no one to help them. It’s different in America, even though the welfare system is not great, we do not have mass starvation. For most, the word poverty suggests an inability to provide food, water, clothing and shelter. According to the 2012 U.S. Census, poverty rates have many variables between ethnic groups. In 2012, 27.8% blacks and 22.3% of Hispanics were impoverished, compared to 8.4% of non-Hispanic whites and 12.1% of Asians. Minority families headed by single-women particularly experience a higher rate of poverty than of families headed by single-men, or married couples, so it makes sense why children are the age group most significantly affected by poverty. Regardless of location, these communities that are victim to poverty by pathology are very low-quality neighborhoods, with bad schools, and little to no job availability.…

The TV series Shameless is based on working class family that lives on the South Side of Chicago. The show is based off the dramatic and chaotic life of the Gallagher family. The family of six children depend on the oldest sister, Fiona, to take care of the family due to the absence of the mother and their incapable alcoholic father who comes and goes as he pleases. The unstable family has to cope with the struggles faced with little money and learn how to take care of themselves and also each other. In this paper, I claim that the show Shameless represents the stereotypical ideas of the poor class through the main character Frank Gallagher, for he is portrayed as a lazy, alcoholic father involved with criminal activities.…
