In 1547 a man named Ivan IV was crowned Emperor of Russia. He was the first Russian ruler to use the label “Tsar,” which means “Caesar” in Russian. Everyone believed he was a gift from God. In 1552 Ivan ordered a church to be built in honor of his military victories. The actual construction did not start until 1555 and continued until 1679. The church was originally called “The Cathedral of the Intercession of the Virgin” but was soon changed to “St Basil’s Cathedral.” St Basil’s Cathedral is a beautiful church. The vivid colors give it a very unique look. It seems unreal due to how bright it is until you see it in person. The way it looks down at the townspeople gives the town a happy feel.
