I think that as Honors College students that are so focused on what career paths we want to follow, and maintaining a 3.5 GPA, we forget that there are other young adults our age that didn’t choose the same path. Let me explain. We live in a world where the societal norm is to graduate high school, and then go to college. However, new reports are finding something rather interesting. The Atlantic posted an article that states that graduation rates for 2014 were strong across the nation (Wong). The article cites this information from the National Center for Education Statistics, which included that in Florida the graduation rate for 2014 was 76.1%. However, there is an interesting twist. Even though, graduation rates across the United States are increasing, the enrollment rates at colleges and universities saw a 1.7% drop the following year (Wong). Reports like this one are increasingly alarming because in today’s economy a high school diploma doesn’t get you very far in life as it used to a decade ago.
