Gatorade is well known for how it refuels and reenergizes athletes during their peak performance times. In order for athletes to accomplish those goals, Gatorade must contain key ingredients important for the body. One of the most important ingredients in Gatorade that distinguishes the product from competitors, is the 21 grams of carbohydrates per 12 ounce serving (Figure 18). Carbohydrates are the body’s main source of energy. Researchers at the Australian Institute of Sport’s Department of Sports Nutrition stated that “the ingestion of carbohydrates, during and after exercise, are critical to the performance of a variety of sports events, and are a key recommendation in current sports nutrition guidelines” (Figure 19). Another key thing lost during workouts is potassium. Potassium is essential in regulating blood pressure, muscle control, and nerve function. Gatorade has 45 milligrams of potassium which is enough to prevent muscle cramping during exercise (Figure 18). It also has 80 calories per ever 12 ounce serving which ensures that each carbohydrate converted to energy counts in a positive way for the athlete (Figure 18).
