The Importance Of Pressure In College

The College sophomore considers changing his or her major from business to kinesiology, or from forensic chemistry to English with a minor in American History. How could a student change their major mid-way through their college career? Concerning my own experience with this decision, there is a lot of gut feeling or change it on a whim influence that dictate these decisions that have—at least up to this point—not been made before. The pressure involved in changing one’s intended major is one of numerous other pressures encountered in college. The trouble with making decisions in college arises as one attempts to interpret their true thoughts and feelings. For so long the influence of teachers, mentors, and parents have done the majority of this work for the student. Though, with college, the unexperienced student faces these challenges and the stressors alone.

Students who react well to the pressures, however, are dealing with the stress equally as well. This is called eustress: “Eustress is the feeling of being in control and confident of your ability to handle the demands and tasks required. Think of it as ‘eustress is you-handling-stress.’ (American Chiropractor).” The students discussed earlier—who made the decisions to take affirmative action—exhibited this eustress: they handled the pressure and stress in a confident manner. They perceived the tasks as something that must be done, something that has no alternative than to be completed.
