The Influence Of Ecoterrorism: The Animal Liberation Front

Decent Essays
Ecoterrorism refers to individuals who were from fairly nonviolent movements and called for a revitalization of the geophysical and biological environment to now demonizing individuals who threaten the environment through ferocious acts (Merriam-Webster,2010). However, while committing terrible acts, those who participate in ecoterrorism still involve themselves in ecological and environmental movements (Swanson, Territo, & Taylor, 2017). For example, setting a fast food restaurant on fire or setting a housing complex on fire that was under construction in San Diego(ADL,2015). Two modern ecoterrorist groups are the Animal liberation front(ALF) and the Earth liberation front(ELF). The Animal Liberation Front is the World’s most dangerous animal

J Baird Callicott’s central criticism against animal liberationists (AL) is that the ethic is individualistic and limited to the concern of animal suffering; this ethic does not consider the morality of preserving the ecosystem. An AL argues that the interests of animals should be considered because they experience pain and suffering. They argue that the ethics of equality should be applied to other animals; all beings capable of suffering are worthy of equal consideration. Intelligence, value to a system, population size, or the destructive nature of the animal has no bearing in this consideration.…

In recent years, there have been an increasing number of acts of Eco-sabotage committed in the name of protecting the environment. Michael Martin defines Eco-sabotage as acts which are illegal, non-public, morally or religiously motivated done with the goal of hampering a process or act which they believe is causing harm to the environment (294). It is important to note that Eco-saboteurs make every attempt to not be arrested for their crimes; their aim is to immediately and directly stop what they believe is harming the environment. Many other Eco-activists criticize this tactic because it only gains short-term results and can actively hamper attempts for long term reform. Eco-saboteurs usually counter this by only committing acts of Eco-sabotage against targets that they believe require drastic action or targets that are unlikely to be peacefully reformed without being pressured by their actions.…

The Animal Liberation Front is a terrorist group that intends to change international policy for animal use and treatment. The group has successfully damaged businesses where animal abuse took place, and freed animal victims of abuse. Some of the businesses that have been targeted have shut down in fear of another attack, which have led the ALF to be successful. The interesting aspect of the ALF is that they have taken a vow not to bring injury to any form of life, and therefore take a careful step to not injure the workers of the businesses perpetrated. The ALF in contrast to another terroristic group like Boko Haram, which has been named one of the five deadliest terrorist groups on the planet, has caused no deaths and two injuries at most…

There have been many different types of domestic terrorist groups and organizations over the years. A form of terrorism that targets its actions based on a perceived threat or harm to the environment is known as Eco-Terrorism. If a group of activists attempt to join the cause of another group and commits violence in the furtherance of the ideals, it could conceivably be considered terrorism. If the outside group were to commit a violent act that resulted in a death, then it has arguably committed an act that is dangerous to human life and violation of law. According to the FBI (2013), domestic terrorism “involve acts dangerous to human life that violate federal or state law”.…
