The Influence Of Dissection On The Grasshopper

Improved Essays
I was completely fine until it was time to dissect it - the grasshopper, I mean. I even completed the pre-lab assignment and didn’t feel grossed out at all. Except when I started to get a little queasy from staring at a picture of the grasshopper so I could label one of the diagrams of the prelab. But aside from that, I thought I was pretty well prepared to dissect a grasshopper, even though I knew I was deathly afraid of all insects and anything that looked similar to them. I somehow convinced myself that by going through with the dissection, I could finally get over my fear of bugs. After all, I had dissected things several times before and never had any problems. How different could dissecting a grasshopper be than dissecting an earthworm? I was terribly, terribly wrong. As soon as my teacher came around with the bucket of grasshoppers, I started to panic. “You can do the honors of picking the grasshopper that we’re gonna cut up,” I said to my lab partner. “Uh, sure. Dunno how much of an honor that is though,” was his reply as he lifted our multi-legged “friend” out of the bucket of repulsive creatures just like it. As soon as I saw the bug in my lab partner’s hands, the arthropod’s bulging eyes, sharp mandibles, and large hind legs made me want …show more content…
How am I supposed to go on with my life when everywhere I turn, there could be an insect lurking in a corner? I don’t know why seeing a bug makes my heart beat like I just ran a marathon, but I have to find out. What causes phobias? Is it possible for phobias to just disappear one day? And most importantly, how should I deal with my phobia? I know almost nothing about phobias besides that mine is one of the more common ones, but I hope that my research on this topic can help me find a way to get rid of my phobia, or at least find a way to avoid insects and arachnids

Billy Wingate sat stubbornly, with crossed arms, outside his principal’s office, waiting to be summoned inside. His mother strode towards him, flummoxed by her son’s reportedly aggressive behaviour, even though this was her third visit. “Billy, I thought I told you that everyone is free to do what they want, especially your friends,” whispered Billy’s mom, as she approached her troubled son. “Ah, Mrs. Wingate!…

Eating insects is considered gross in western social orders yet, in other countries, 2 billion individuals devour insects on a frequently premise. Some will say that the advantages of utilizing bugs as nourishment is great to the point that it's about time that we change over the other 5 billion individuals into insects. Marcel Dicke, ecological entomologist, discusses this in a short speech called “Why Not Eat Insects.” The speaker’s main point that he is trying to get across is basically what the title says. With our population growing so rapidly and food supply being so limited, the question of why not eat insects is a serious question.…

Louis was almost too fixated to notice that Harry had sat down on his mattress opposite Louis. The green eyed lad just sat there for a moment, every now and again his mouth opening, then shutting again as if trying to spit out the words which were obviously on the tip of his tongue. “Do you want to talk about what happened? I’ve heard that talking through things makes it better, we could try that?”…

It was a quiet Friday at Henry’s. There were only five customers scattered around the restaurant. There was elderly couple at one of the booths quietly eating their food, two younger men at the bar chatting about their plans for the night; and one man sitting near the window and reading the local tabloids. Both George and Lennie were, in the back of the restaurant, working. George was cleaning dishes, while Lennie was trying his best to mop.…

Ever since I was little I’ve had a fear of house centipedes. My mom once told me a story where she woke up and there was a centipede on the ceiling above her I am still horrified of house centipedes to this day. The reasons why they scare the crap out of me are because they move fast, they look very gross, and they hide in unsuspecting corners of the house. Whenever I try to catch them they run very fast and are sometimes hard to catch, for example I went to catch one late at night and when I came back from grabbing the paper towel it was gone and I couldn’t find it anywhere. After that I was basically avoiding my floor for the rest of the night.…

There are many autobiographical elements in Kafka’s The Metamorphosis, as striking similarities and parallels can be drawn between Gregor Samsa and Franz Kafka, whose names are very similar in letter count and sound. This use of name parallel is common for autobiographical fiction, as seen in Bioshock’s parallel to Atlas Shrugged, employing the use of Andrew Ryan in stead of Ayn Rand. The family and situation depicted in The Metamorphosis mirrors that of Kafka’s real life. Like Gregor, Kafka disliked his authoritarian father, and felt compelled to work a job he disliked in order to financially support his family.…
