The Influence Of Demographics

Demographics are important when researching mental illnesses in individuals. These traits help professionals like epidemiologists gather data that can help decide what types of people could potentially become mentally ill. Epidemiologists will obtain demographics for surveying purposes. Information such as age, race, and marital status, to name a few, gives reliability in one’s study. (Cockerham 2014) Biological differences that men and women have, can contribute to mental illness. Women for instance can often experience mixed emotions when they are going through a hormonal change or imbalance. Menstruation or even menopause can disrupt the regular mood a woman normally has. While this is not to say that a woman’s cycle is the cause for mental illness, we can see how hormonal changes can bring on depression as well as anger. Women do however have a greater risk for developing anxiety issues or depression. (Cockerham 2014) When it comes to males who are not married, “high testosterone and antisocial behavior” (Cockerham 2014). could be a culprit for depressive thoughts and actions. Elevated levels of androgen can also encourage aggression. (Cockerham 2014.) Men also could develop “personality disorders” (Cockerham 2014) more so than women.
