The Influence Of Critical Thinking

Critical thinking, although isn’t a controversial topic is a topic that no one can seem to agree on what the definition is. The Greek Philosopher Socrates is widely thought as the man who started the movement of critical thinking claiming that “the unexamined life is not worth living”(Florence,2014,p.2) which fits nicely with his framework which was often questioning, the assumptions undergird one’s life. In addition Arisotle’s also played a big part in shaping the critical thinking movement, when Arisotle outlined his views of the principle behind education saying “the best life for individuals and corporate bodies was the life of virtue” (Florence, 2014,p.2) these virtues being: nature, habit and Rational principle. Discourse on method was the works of Rene Descartes where he introduced the idea of rational method. Rene Descartes believed that one must avoid accepting anything as true that he or she did not personally and clearly know to be so, his philosophy was that “people needed to employ their own reasoning to grow in their understanding of truth.” (Florence,2014,p.2) “reasonable and reflective thinking that is focused on deciding what to reasonably believe or do”(Richards 1994,p.13) “Critical Thinking: its Nature, Measurement and Improvement”(Sternburg, 1885,p.46) “A taxonomy of critical thinking Disposition and Abilities”( Ennis,1987,p.10) these are three definition of Critical thinking that vary on what critical thinking is and there is a lot more out there , so finding a definite definition of Critical thinking is almost impossible. The program is designed as a five-day detox which then allows clients to enter the treatment program. Through further examination Sarah sees some key ethical issues as some people were using the detox program for what it was intended for. A small group of people seem to use the detox clinic regularly as a place to clean up and have a meal these clients seem to have no motivation to work towards sobriety. A second area of concern was that some people in the program were having somewhat of a lengthier stay the staff at the detox center explained it was the people that were at high risk of relapse if they were put back onto the streets without going straight to a program, another factor into the situation is that the program is full. To address the situation of people having a lengthier stay then average a Friend and I talked to a representative of AHS “Actually, being able to accommodate lengthier stays for individuals at high risk of relapse is actually an added bonus that AHS would more than likely support. Because it is a requirement at most residential treatment centres to be sober for at least 5 days and often intake from residential treatment centres don't line up with the end of a 5 day detox program. In the eyes of AHS, this makes the program better” (T. Mountain, personal communication, October 15,

to some extent like Dewey, philosopher Harvey Siegel (1988) believed that critical thinking is the result of action. He held on the conception of two dimensions of critical thinking, stating that a critical thinker is “one who is appropriately moved by reasons” (p. 32). His description, then, includes two dimensions—a reason assessment component and a critical attitude component. The reason assessment component involves the critical thinker being able to understand and put into practice the principles governing the assessment of reasons, where the critical attitude component implies that the critical thinker embodies certain dispositions and habits of the mind. Siegel called it a “critical spirit” (p.…

James Mccay, director of the University of Pennsylvania’s Center on the Continuum of Care in the Addictions states that “typically, what people have been told to do is go to a lot of Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics meetings… the usual line is 90 meetings in 90 days, and once-a-week group counseling...” which is in fact something that many, if not all, patients are told at one point or another. The only problem with this statement is that without someone acting upon this and guiding the patient on how to find these sort of meetings and counseling groups this becomes just another saying to the patient and not an actual resource. Ray Tamasi, president and chief executive of Gosnold on Cape Cod, another addiction treatment organization, gives her input on people's perspective of how rehabilitation for alcohol addiction and substance abuse is supposed to be some kind of miraculous success, when in reality the transitioning between outpatient and inpatient is abysmal. The reason Tamasi believes that the transitioning is extremely difficult is because patients are not given the tools necessary for their own success. Another reason why patients do not receive the appropriate after care is that “insurance didn’t used to cover anything post-discharge” (Madly Chalk) which led to many unwanted expenses.…

The detox process is very important because it helps cleanse a patient's mind and body of the substances that only serve to interrupt the treatment process. With a clear mind, it's during residential treatment that patients learn the truth about their substance abuse and begin to develop the life skills and support mechanisms that so often become the tools necessary for relapse prevention. There are two facts about addiction treatment. First, it can't begin until the substance abuser is ready to admit they have a disease. Secondly, they have to understand that recovering on their own in not an option for most people.…

In one of my cited text it states, “Most college faculty don’t realize that they lack a substantive concept of critical thinking, they believe that they sufficiently understand critical thinking, and assume they are already teaching students it.” Because of this, we as the students often find ourselves in a lecture, writing for memorization, and (largely ineffective) short-term study habits are still the norm in college instruction and teaching today. With this in mind, the students can engage in what they are learning but they are often unfathomable because of this scholars are fixed to grasp similar situations instead of more complex ones. Also in one of my cited text it states,”Critical thinking is the art of thinking about thinking with a view to improving it. Critical thinkers seek to improve thinking, in three interrelated phases.…

Critical thinking is not only a process, but a skill that develops over the course of a person’s life. Dr. Linda Elder, the Assistant Director of the Center for Critical Thinking, created a stage theory of critical thinking development that defines critical thinking into six stages. In reference to the article by Linda Elder and Richard Paul “Critical Thinking Development: A Stage Theory,” I believe that stage four, the practicing thinker, best represents my development as a thinker. As previously mentioned, Dr. Linda Elder’s stage theory of critical thinking development consists of six stages. In stage one, Linda Elder argues that a majority of people begin heavily embedded in this stage of the “unreflective thinker.”…
