The Influence Of Communication In Football

Words have a stronger influence then most people would think. Whether it be words of encouragement, or words that tear a person down, the way a person communicates with others can change the whole thought process of the one receiving the message given. For example, to be a part of a successful athletic team, there needs to be some sort of communication, whether it be coaches or players.
One example of how words and communication can be influential is an experience of mine that I will never forget. My sophomore year of high school, I was pulled up from the junior varsity team to varsity to help the team throughout the playoffs. During this time, the football team was doing well. They had not yet failed to win a game, and usually did so with ease.

Although there was team dinners, nights out on the town, any type of team bonding activities a person can name, there is one activity that the team always did that stood out to me the most. Before every game, the team would start to gather into the gym long before we were required to be there. Some team mates sat in little groups and talked, others had their headphones on while looking of into the distance. However, once everyone on the team was present, the team would form a one big group. One by one, each and every player, no matter how much they played or not, would take a turn to say a goal they had for the upcoming game and what they brought to the team. Each goal told by a player allowed us to hold them to that goal and expect him to fulfill that goal, as well as give us trust in that player. When asked to look back on those moments Konnor Robinson said “Yeah that was pretty cool. I think that it put a lot of trust in each other. We all knew that the person next to us wanted it as bad as we did. It gave us the confidence to say ‘yeah we got this’”

The screamfree.com website offers advice on how to respond to almost any type of situation as opposed to reacting (Runkel, 2017). Strangely enough, the straightforward message on how “peace begins with a pause,” specifically hit home (Runkel, 2017). Moreover, it brought memories to mind that most of my thirties were spent attempting to find solutions to obstacles by springing into action without thought to the consequences. Although, fortunately, during my early forties I was blessed with receiving parenting classes that taught the value in taking the time to consider the details before giving a commitment to the many questions that children might ask. Accordingly, the screamfree.com website and the parenting classes coincide closely with communication in the workplace.…

The B-Teams game started and I was on the field for kick return and I got the ball and everything just slowed down and I took advantage of this so I took the ball and ran straight up the sidelines for a touchdown! Looking back, there were a few other people close to me, but this helped bring our team out of our our losing streak back into our winning streak, but the game wasn't over, two quarters remained left in the B game, and this was just the start of the game that I will look back on and say this was the game that started it all.…

As far back as I can remember, reading has always been a tremendous part of my life. Growing up, my mother introduced reading as one of the most important skills I could learn. Throughout my childhood, my entire family constantly incorporated reading into my daily schedule by helping me complete word searches, reading books, or rehearsing the ABC’s. Every night before bed, my mother and I would read a page out of a children’s bible book called Blessings Every Day as opposed to the classic Green Eggs and Ham. Reading has taught me how to exercise my imagination, how to effectively communicate with others, and relieves my stress.…

My thoughts on human nature can best be summed up by the character Sirius Black in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix: “We’ve all got both light and dark inside us. What matters is the part we choose to act on, that’s who we really are.” Our ability to critically think about our behavior and make choices is what makes us human and sets us apart from our hominid ancestors. In fact, as far as other species are concerned, there is no concept of “good” and “evil”; there is predator and prey, threatening and safe, dominant and submissive. Morality is not a factor at play in the animal kingdom.…
