Cinderella, Snow White, Barbie, even the famous Muppets TV show have a slightly hidden message within them regarding what is perceived as beautiful. Miss Piggy with her voluptuous figure and beautiful dresses presents herself as a legendary puppet diva giving bits of advice about makeup and fashion while influencing children about what is perceived beautiful and fashionable. We are presented from a young age with images of what the society considers beautiful and aesthetic. The reality television series “Toddlers and Tiaras” representing the lives of participants in children beauty pageants is another example. We are faced with beauty in fairy tales and TV shows at an age when we can barely think yet subconsciously these examples influence later our thinking. “Mirror mirror on the wall, who is the prettiest of them all?”

What are we teaching our children and most importantly how is their self - identity and our influence as a society connected to the overall perception of what is beautiful? All the attention our society gives to beauty with the movies, fairy tales , tv shows , Disney princesses and magical fairy godmothers who transform the young ladies into the most beautiful girls in existence show beauty and social identity have a strong connection. Our characters are shaped by several factors, our surrounding being one of them and what we consider as beautiful is a part of our identity as much as nationality or political views.
