All most one-half of Asian Americans hold at least one college degree and Asian Americans consistently score above average on standardized tests (McNamara & Burns, 2009). The education level of Asian Americans also affect the image they portray, not only to police officers, but also to the public at large. They are seen as successful and hard-working. Many Asian American have immigrated to the United States and started successful businesses. Many own and operate small ‘mom and pop’ type businesses such as convenience stores and hotels (McNamara & Burns, 2009). They may appear to be quite successful, when the amount of labor and hours devoted to such businesses are factored into the equation, their actual wages may be below the norm (McNamara & Burns). The image of being the model minority, having overcome obstacles and working hard, they are more accepted than other groups which translate into less barriers. Being more successful than other groups enables Asian American to live in better neighborhoods with less problems which leads to less contact with police. While Asian Americans may appear to be the model minority, not all are so fortunate.
