The year of 1939 started one of the biggest nightmares to come for the world. Germany had invaded Poland, starting the second World War (History). Among the millions of those affected by Hitler’s reach was a young girl named Anne Frank. With a diary she received, at the age of thirteen, she became famous for her entries about the world around her, and what the Holocaust was like for a young Jewish girl at the time. The reason her diary is so important today is because she brought the person back to the Jew. As to say, she left us with a real piece of the Holocaust, not a statistic or horror story, just the raw accounts of what happened through her eyes (Ballweg). With her diary, Anne was able to portray her thoughts and emotions pertaining to the events

One of the largest reasons Anne Frank is so widely recognized today is because, as Thomas Heppener from the Anne Frank Museum in Amsterdam had said, "It's an individual fate that gave this horrible number of murdered people a face. That has made Anne Frank a symbol.” Anne is the person behind the history, she represents a real life that has gone through this time of anti-Semitism and has left her story for us to learn from. Anne’s Diary is seen as a symbol of all Jewish people of that time, as she wrote, “I hear the approaching thunder that, one day, will destroy us too. I feel the suffering of millions” (237). This conveys the emotional turmoil of countless Jewish families who also went into hiding during World War two. As Ballweg had said, “Diary of Anne Frank lifted the young girl from the anonymous mass of victims and turned her into the face of the Holocaust.” Anne’s diary is a valuable piece of historical documentation as well as it expresses her hopes and dreams for the future.
