Professor Snape Character Analysis

The infamous character of Professor Snape is one of great complexity and depth. It is his cold and ruthless demeanor that has readers origionally seething with hatred for his warped personality. His mistreatment of the main hero, Harry, further irks the readers until it is revealed later in the series as to what the underlying motives and agenda was.

In the series Snape is an exceptionally skillful wizard with a dark past who is the potions master at Hogwarts school. For the majority of the series, Snape’s actions seem to serve that of Harry’s nemesis, Lord Voldemort. However, it is Harry’s mentor Dumbledore who urges him to pay no mind to Snape’s cold exterior, for cloaked underneath his animosity is a layered persona whose unwavering loyalty is to be trusted and relied upon wholeheartedly. We catch a glimpse of James bullying Snape in their school years and Snape never lets go of that resentment and lets it eat him each time he looks at Harry. Snape blames James that Lily did not end up with him. Snape blame game is what turned him into the monster he is. Snape never once stopped to internally reflect on himself and analyze his character. Yes he was neglected as child and was not nourished with the proper love in his home. When he became a teacher, he let his bitterness carry out into his teaching methods. Yes he was bullied in school, something most people can relate to, he let that carry over into his mistreatment of students. Lily chose James over him in the end, but he never once realized it was for the way reacted to things. His love of the dark arts pushed her further way. Him calling her a mudblood and holding a grudge against James only made her realize as to who he truly
