The Inequation Of Inecurity In 'My Last Duchess' By Robert Browning

Decent Essays
Throughout the poem, My Last Duchess, Browning establishes the concept of human jealousy rooting from insecurity. The message is conveyed through the voice of the duke, whose jealousy is evident in the punctuation usage and rhythm scheme of Browning. The poem starts off in a iambic pentameter rhyme, which is allowing the poem to start with an even tone. This tone gives the reader a sense of calm and level-headed discussion. However, as the poem continues, we see a break from the normal scheme in the form of double hyphens. These hyphens separate the duke’s inner thoughts and the duke’s outer mask of diplomacy. He combines what he is saying and what he is thinking as in “She thanked men, --good! But thanked somehow -- I know not how”. This break

In Elizabeth Browning’s pleading letter to Napoleon III, Elizabeth uses many rhetorical devices in order to convince the Emperor of France to pardon Hugo. She flatters His Majesty Napoleon III in an attempt to win his goodwill. Second, she uses syntax in order to create an intelligent letter. Finally, she thoroughly explains her purposes to Napoleon. Thus using flattery, syntax, and logos, Browning was able to effectively persuade Napoleon III to pardon Hugo, had of course he sent the letter.…

Matrimony, monogamy, and children either leads to happiness, hardship, or usually a combination of both. Sharon Olds’ touches these subjects in her poem “Station.” To fully understand the deeper meanings within the poem one must understand that Olds’ 35-year marriage was strained to the point of divorce, and that this poem records an event that occurs towards the beginning of this strain. She uses her husband’s description and their interaction as a canvas to paint her subject matter into physical form, combining the physical and emotional. Olds’ uses simile, metaphor, and apostrophe to describe her husband as a “lord,” and through these comparisons she shows admiration towards her husband (9).…

"My Last Duchess" explicitly portrays the emotions and thoughts of the Duke of Ferrara. As it is set in a private art gallery in the palace of the Duke of Ferrara and depicts a devastating self-portrait of royalty that exhibits more of the Duke's personality than Ferrara intends. The poem also reveals the inner thoughts of the Duke Of Ferrara through the form of monologue. In the poem there are elements of jealousy as the portrait of the Duchess was made by Fra Pandolf; a monk who emphasises that he once was a religious and chaste man.…

Harold Bloom introduced Robert Browning’s “My Last Duchess” first appeared in the “Dramatic Lyrics in 1842”(13), inspired by the history of a Renaissance Duke, Alfonso II, a widower of a young wife died in suspicious circumstances. The history of this situation followed with Duke Alfonso courted another young lady, whom he eventually married. “My Last Duchess” is a monologue style of poem that happened during the time of the Duke negotiation for courtship of a new wife. Rhetorical Strategies Used in E. B. Browning Letter In her letter to the French Emperor Napoleon III, Elizabeth Barrett Browning formulates a very convincing argument by the use of her rhetorical devices such as a pathos appeal to her subject, alliteration; a repetition of words, imperative sentences, asyndeton, and similes as methods of persuasion in order to convince Napoleon to pardon Victor Hugo. Browning attempts to undermine her own authority and lack of title, as a means to show Napoleon that she acknowledges that he [Napoleon] is the superior, stronger of the two.…

Name: Course: Tutor: Date: Lost Love or Obsession There are dark emotions explicitly seen in “My last Duchess” throughout. Glancing across the sea to the American poet Edgar Allan Poe, one discovers much of the same ghoulish obsession with obscurity observed in Browning's poetry. However, Poe's work seems to be deficient in the mockery found in Browning's work. Poe’s poem frequently disparate and is often admired as one of the most beautiful love poems of the English language.…

In the beginning of Paula Kopacz article, she addresses concern about whether Anne Bradstreet’s poem, “The Four Monarchies,” is finished or not. Kopacz explains how Bradstreet is “restless” to finish the poem, and that “the circumstances made finishing impossible” (175). Although many people have supported that this poem was not finished, Kopacz argues that the poem was finished after Bradstreet successfully reached New England. Critics do not recognize the finished poem because it was not finished appropriately. Since the poem was not completed appropriately, according to Kopacz, Anne Bradstreet’s poetry was recognized “primarily for its historical value” (176).…

Though many readers may not understand the allusion, the author’s smart decision to name the poem after said allusion may have prompted some to wonder and ask why she named it so, thus leading them to the original source and broadening their understanding of the poem’s meaning. While short, simple, and quite direct, the poem conveys deep and weighty feelings of melancholy and reserved hope. The weakest part of the poem is its indifferent rhyme scheme, as it flows unevenly in some places. However, that does help set the tone, as the tone itself is defeated and…

Introduces us to a character known simply as "Curley's wife". This female is presented as an attention-hungry social outcast desperate for companionship and conversation. My last duchess by Robert Browning, is a poem based within the view of the Duke of Ferrara during a conversation with the painter: Alfonso. About his late wife the duchess. Unlike ‘Of Mice and Men’ and ‘My Last Duchesses’ where the reader is led to believe both women are or where inexplicitly killed, Thomas Hardy's; ‘The Ruined Maid’ delves into the lives of girls once bound by employment, later to be differentiated by dignity.…

The two poems I am going to discuss are Robert Browning‘s ‘My Last Duchess’ , and Edgar Allen Poe‘s ‘The Raven’ . I will discuss the way the forms of the poems and how their different structures, one being written in verse and the other in dramatic monologue, effect the reader’s interpretation, lead to an unreliable narrator. I will discuss the use of rhyme and rhythm, and also how the speaker’s psyche and strong emotions, like anger and jealousy in ‘My Last Duchess’ and madness in ‘The Raven’ alter the speaker’s reliability. ‘My Last Duchess’ is written in the form of a dramatic monologue, and uses iambic pentameter to mimic natural speech, as well as using rhyming couplets, which give the poem a faster pace and gives the character a stronger voice.…

It is difficult for some people to go against the beliefs of the majority, especially when a topic is considered too controversial to challenge. In Margaret Atwood’s “My Last Duchess”, this happens to be the case for her female protagonist when her class studies a poem by Robert Browning that is also titled “My Last Duchess”, in which a Duke had his Duchess killed for his own selfish reasons. Unexpectedly, the young girl’s interpretation of the Duke is vastly different from the rest of her class, thereby leading her to struggle with having a contentious opinion in addition to dealing with the realities of womanhood and teenage relationships. The purpose of Robert Browning’s poem, “My Last Duchess”, in Margaret Atwood’s short story of the same…
