Mobileye’s dilemma in terms of whether to low the prices on the products to gain some market share at the low-end of automotive market or to hold the prices can be solved by strategic analysis of the industry as a whole and the firm itself.
To review the attractiveness of the industry of Advanced Driver Assistance System, ADAS, modifications of the business environment, the opportunities and threats, as well as different factors should be assessed in order to identify what influences firm performance. By looking at Porter’s Five Forces Analysis, it’s evident that ADAs industry is attractive (Exhibit 2). Threats of new entrants are medium because there are three main barriers to entry. As has been examined previously, Mobileye has been an innovation leader in the ADAS industry due to cutting-edge software and data research. In addition, Mobileye’s owners have created the value by technical and business knowledge and experience, and they had “built a unique team “because of developed employees’” loyalty for the company (4). Besides, Mobileye has had an advantageous position in the structure of the ADAS industry because it has allowed the company to work with both Tier 1 suppliers and OEMs, while Tier1 suppliers can only work with certain OEMs due to their subcategories’ selection of Tier1s. Development of valuable, rare, and inimitable capabilities has enabled the firm to sustain the competitive advantage in the rival industry (Exhibit 8). As mentioned earlier, Mobileye has created value by increasing customer’s willingness to buy, and it can set higher prices than competitors, which is a rare capability. Besides, Mobileye has isolating mechanisms to prevent rivals from imitating competitive advantage of the firm. First, it has early-mover advantage because of learning curve, reputation, and switching costs of buyer. Mobileye has made bigger volumes of output, which allowed getting lower variable costs than competitors. It has built reputation over the years on the market through expansive testing, so buyers don’t have just uncertainty about different brands but they will face switching costs due to developed knowledge to specifically Mobileye’s technology. Second, there are legal restrictions such as patents that don’t allow competitors for sometime to duplicate unique capabilities of the firm.
