Women were at the forefront of social movements because they started to feel more importance with small jobs and they were the ones dealing with drunk husbands and were in charge of their families, known in Republican motherhood. They knew how homes should run and what they wanted. Temperance was important to them because their husbands went and worked for their family and they needed to be sober for their jobs and not come home angry and drunk. When women started getting jobs in factories, they felt that they should have more rights since they were making money just like men.
