Revolution Steam Engine

Humanity is a collective group of thinkers, scattered across time and space, and, as such, no invention can be attributed to a single person, rather several people who continue to make innovations and improvements upon the design. It may then be argued that inventions aren't created, but grown through the ages until it is perfected. Such is the case with Thomas Newcomen, who, through improvements upon the design made by Thomas Savery, led to one of the major catalysts of the Industrial Revolution, the steam engine. The collective development of the steam engine allowed for one of the major revolution in mankind history the progress of one of the major time of the world, one that is, in some ways, continuing until today. The first written reference of the steam engine can be back traced to Hero of Alexandria, circa 120 B.C.E, through his manuscript “Spiritalia seu Pneumatica.” In this document, he introduced an apparatus, the aeolipile, which was able to rotate a globe about its axis through the use of steam. Newcommen used the same design of Savery but reengineered the pumps so that it would be able to use less energy for the same amount of work. This modification to Savery’s design did not require excessive amounts of heat, thus making it able to withstand greater depths. Being the first engine of its kind, it was named the Atmospheric Steam-Engine and provided ground breaking success in the field. The Newcomen steam engine was a conglomerate of advancements made by previous engineers who had worked on this machine. It had the engine of Christiaan Huygens, a prominent Dutch scientist and mathematician, and the cylinder and pistons made from the improvements of Dennis Papin, a French inventor.
