During the industrial age, strict management practices, rigid hierarchies and direct forms of control are necessary to increase productivity, because all employees need to do is to perform defined roles with specific duties, such as screwing nuts on an assembly line, the only duty of the factory worker Charlie Chaplin played in “Modern Times”. He was deemed valuable only for his usefulness as a means for the interests of the employer, subjected to such indignity as being forced-fed by a machine and an accelerating assembly line at an ever increasing rate. Eventually, the factory worker suffered nervous breakdown and was sent to the hospital. The employees were merely considered as a means, “an expendable commodity”, to the goal. The employees are required to work in traditional working hours, follow orders and be monitored by their managers all the time. They are not recognized as persons, but rather, machines. They feel confined in small space, limited in thinking and even rebellion inside, which is, in fact, detrimental to the productivity. When I was on my honeymoon vacations, my supervisor kept sending me emails, one of which regarding the campaign report presented to clients when I got back after the vacations. Actually, I had everything ready in my laptop with me and would get it done during my vacations. But, the moment I saw the email from her, asking, “When can you complete the report?” I felt pushed and distrusted. I didn 't have the motivation to work on it any …show more content…
The outcome is foreseeable: the former will bring more talent people together to success, while the latter will hire incompetent people and stagnate the organization. Some company founders or CEOs get hooked on the power trip of saying they’re the CEO and won’t let go, while at companies to go public, mostly those in IT industry, the CEO steps down and hires a more experienced CEO to run the company. In 2010, Evan Williams, the then CEO of Twitter, stepped down to “focus on product strategy” and asked COO Dick Costolo to become the new CEO and run the business. The reason he gave was that he’s most satisfied while pushing product direction and Dick Costolo is a critical leader in devising and executing their revenue
