In 1975 Congress provided a federal law to make sure that schools help educational needs of all children with a disability. This law was called the Education for All Handicapped Children Act. In 1990 they changed the name of the law and as of today it is now called The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The IDEA is the giver of funds for the state, federal to ensure that special education is available for all children that have disabilities. The reason for the IDEA is to get students ready and prepared to further their education so they can get a job and live independently.
