English Vinglish Analysis

English Vinglish is the first Bollywood movie that I have every seen. I learned about the Indian culture and how people are viewed and respected. I also learned how other countries view America. Overall, it was a very good movie. It was the same quality of a standard Hollywood movie. The plot line is based on a married woman named Shashi who is viewed as less than others in her family because she doesn’t speak English very well. She travels to America for a family wedding and ends up taking classes to learn English and surprises her family at the wedding by giving a speech in English.
Bollywood movies usually last between two and three hours which is much longer when compared with Hollywood movies, which are about one to one and a half hours

The daughter in the movie was so excited to come to New York because her family member was marrying an American. Indians who speak English are more superior to ones that only speak Hindu. Since the movie is filmed in Bollywood, there isn’t a good or bad representation of them. Men are viewed as superiors, especially in the Indian culture. In America, they are viewed as equals and Shashi is not used to this. Throughout the movie, Shashi is learning to accept the fact that she is a talented woman that can accomplish anything if she puts her mind to it. In most Hollywood movies, I think the Americans are viewed about the same. We tend to think that the United States is great and we portray ourselves as such. Women in Hollywood have more opportunities to succeed but are viewed more as sexual objects rather than housewives like in English Vinglish. Women are not viewed as being the property of a man and having to do whatever they say. Most movies give them independence and allow them to make their own mistakes.
I did have an emotional reaction to the movie. I was rooting for Shashi the entire movie for her to stand up for herself. Finally at the end of the movie when she does her wedding speech in English, I felt so proud of her. She finally reached her goals and stood up for herself when no one thought she could. It was a very touching moment when she finally reached her goals and

In my family, it is expected to go to college and to make something of your self. It has always been assumed that I go on to higher education than high school. I never saw it as a privilege. At the conclusion of the movie, Shashi goes back to her husband. The directors made it seem like she would end up with Laurent, so it came as a surprise to me when she stayed with her husband. Even though throughout the entire movie they never showed a happy marriage or any affection between the two of them. I don’t feel like her and her husband were really in love and Laurent would have been a good match for her. I am guessing that Hindu cultures do not take divorce lightly. It was very evident that the right thing to do was to stay with her husband no matter what. But if she had left Satish it would have affected her kids and her mother that was living with them back home. I really enjoyed how even though the movie was made in Bollywood, they incorporated many languages and cultures.
English Vinglish was a very good movie in my opinion. It definitely made me more open to watching movies that weren’t made in Hollywood or America in general. I wouldn’t mind watching another Bollywood movie. If Netflix streamed Bollywood movies, I would be more tempted to watch them. I liked that the entire movie was based on love, but not a sexual relationship. So many movies and TV shows have a strong basis in sex, because sex sells. It was refreshing to see

The mise-en-scene of the movie is very realistic and authentic. The color palette between the white and black is really distinct to the eyes, it has a very particular stylistic difference. The acting used in the film seems to be method acting and in the particular situation method acting was a very good choice of the direction since it is a very historical film and also brought to life by some British actors. The musical choices of the movies are also very distinct and give another face to the film.…

In the opening scenes the audience gets a feel for who these characters really are. In Unit V, lessons one and two was an excellent guide to follow as I began the process of revising my literature review assignment. However, what I have discovered in the revision process that was most accommodating for me, was to read each sentence thoroughly to prevent sentence fragment, comma spices, and run-on-sentence. Also, I realized that after I had corrected and made necessary changes to my initial literature review, putting the project away for several hours and then returning helped me to eliminate unnoticed errors I had overlooked in my assignment.…

    Machinal Characters

In the story of Machinal by Sophie Treadwell, the portrayal of the young woman is unlike the other female characters we have encountered. Unlike the other characters, she is not named, but rather referred as the young woman and at a point, just a woman, but then the male characters like her husband and her lovers are all named. In the part of the representation of modernity in the naming of the characters, we can see that although the setting of the story is advanced and progressive in the sense of a woman having a job, the advancement in technology and so much more, the part and the role of a woman is still backward. In Melanctha, the story was set around the character, her background and her society while in Machinal, the story revolves around…

American Born Chinese and stereotypes “Children must be taught how to think, not what to think.” I believe this quote by Margaret Mead is very accurate and is something that all parents, teachers and adults should think about. “A stereotype is used to categorize a group of people. People don 't understand that type of person, so they put them into classifications, thinking that everyone who is that needs to be like that, or anyone who acts like their classifications is one.”…

Throughout the entirety of this English 101 course, I have seen my skills as a writer grow. In the beginning of the school year, my writing fell short of my expectations, but as I continued to work and learn the principles of writing, I have written papers that I am proud to say are mine. Among the aspects of my writing I have improved, the best strives are seen within my my counter arguments and overall strength and coherency of my papers. To begin, when looking at a paper I wrote in August on necessity of first drafts, there were large gaps in my elaboration, bringing concerns as to whether I was arguing and proving a point or merely summarizing what Lamott, the author of the article, originally said. When attempting to argue my evidence, I stated,…

Love’s Labour’s Lost is, perhaps, Shakespeare’s most adventurous play, in terms of the language used. For years, scholars have been fascinated by the way Shakespeare plays with language in this script, pushing past its conventions and rules to transform words into art. In his 1965 essay, Love’s Labour’s Lost: A Wantoning with Words, James Calderwood explains that the language found in this play is unlike that of any other piece written by Shakespeare. Calderwood writes that the language used becomes “an autonomous symbolic system whose value, somewhat like that of pure mathematics, lies less in its relevance to reality than in its intrinsic fascination” (pg. 317). This fascination with language in Love’s Labour’s…
