In current society, it is extremely unusual to find a young student who loves to read. With all of the technology in society, reading is not usually a favorite. However, Lexi, who is a nine-year-old female, loves to read. She usually reads from one to two hours outside of school. Lexi also enjoys Americas Home Funniest Videos, cheetahs, playing with her friends, Cinderella, and she wants to be a doctor when she grows up. Lexi's reading interests include, fantasy, horror, humor, and as she says, "girl stuff." Lexi's favorite genre is fiction, and the last book she read was El Deafo, by Cece Bell, which she enjoyed. Lexi's reading goal is to improve on bigger words, although she still considers herself a talented reader. Lexi definitely loves to laugh since she enjoys Americas Home Funnies Videos and books with humor. …show more content…
The nonfiction book I chose for Lexi is titled, The Incredible Pop-Up Body Book, by Richard Walker. This book helps students learn about their body, mind and the functions of the body. Inside it has a giant fold out human body model that allows the student to understand further what the body accomplishes and where everything is inside the body. The book goes over the bones, muscles, heart, brain, systems in the body, and even more. This nonfiction book has a recommended age of ten and up, which would be perfect for Lexi since she considers herself a strong reader. Additionally, since this is a higher age level, it will help her work on her vocabulary, which is her current reading goal. To supplement that goal even further, the book has a table of contents, glossary, index and the real names of each

The book I chose for my independent reading project was The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, by Michelle Hodkin. I would recommend this book to people between the ages of 14 and 18. Hopkin's book is in the category of young adult novels which describes the ages I would recommend. There were definitely negative points to this book but the positives outweighed them.…

Kassidy Bollman is the student who I have had the pleasure of working with over the past several weeks. Kassidy and her twin sister, Hailey, are 7 years old. She is a fan of, anything pink, chicken noodle soup, reading, and the movie Frozen. During this time that I spent with Kassidy, I found that she added personality to the stories that she read aloud. Literacy Narrative A fiery red-headed, nine-year old, who lived at home alone, is who inspired me to learn how to read. Pippi Longstocking was the one and only person I idolized from the ages four to eight. My love for Pippy, and reading, began because my mother would read to me a couple of pages from Pippi’s books each night before bed.…

She enjoys reading all types of books from adventure books, nonfiction books about historical disasters, cookbooks, and books with strong girl characters. Louise's reading notebook reflects the consistent effort she applies to improving her reading skills each day. Louise can decode the majority of text at her current reading level, however when she approaches an unfamiliar word, she requires assistance in order to apply decoding strategies effectively. It’s critical for Louise to self monitor as she reads to make sure that the words she is reading look right, sound right, and make…

Everybody during their spare time, especially a young child who is in the process of barely discovering who he/she is, has different interests regarding the type of topics and genres they enjoy reading. I had the pleasure of interviewing, for this particular project, a family oriented, ten-year-old female named Selena Dominguez. After questioning her I discovered that, although not a fan of reading, she does enjoy reading fiction books filled with fantasy and adventure. Two books that I will be recommending for her leisure time are: The Girl Who Could Not Dream by Sarah Beth Durst and Lost in Lexicon: An Adventure In Words And Numbers by Pendred Noyce and Joan Charles.…

When running into someone for the first time, people often inquire “who are you?” On the surface this question appears simple enough; you give your name, maybe a fact about why you are there, and the question seems to be satisfied. However, if you turn that question inward and ask “who am I?” you discover that what appeared to be a shallow puddle of a question is actually a great well of complexity. When asking the questions “who am I?”…

This book is about a young African American girl who is excited for tuesday, for Tuesday is the day she gets to visit the library. I picked this book because it is age appropriate for the classroom and this is exactly the type of book this classroom needs to fill this deficit. The depiction of Lola the young African American girl exposed the children to someone who does not look like them, except for the one African American Student. For her she now would have a face to make a connection with in a text in the class. I think the entire classroom would gravitate toward and enjoy this book.…

To be honest I don't remember learning to read. It just seems like I've always known how to. I don't remember the struggle and determination little kids have trying to pronounce words that I can say with just a snap of my finger. It seems like reading is something I've always known how to do. If it's something I've known for awhile why don't I engage in this activity more?…

Many of the short stories in Elizabeth McCracken’s HERE’S YOUR HAT WHAT’S YOUR HURRY (1993) contain characters so abnormal that they are seen in circus sideshows. When I was young I was never the best at reading even though my parents owned many books and magazines that they read on a daily basis. My mother enjoyed reading her gossip magazines that she would receive in the mail once a month and my father had a whole bookshelf full of history books. My parents would always encourage me to read the books I would check out at the school library to improve my reading and writing but that advice usually went in through one ear and out the other. The only books I would really attempt to read had to be humorous or horrifying, my favorites were the Goosebumps collection. I loved reading these books alone in my room where I couldn’t be sidetracked by all the commotion that went on in my house.…
